Year 10 Design and Technology students were fortunate enough to have a visit from the DUEM (Durham University Electric Motorsport) team to share their design and development work on an electric motorsport car called ‘Ortus’.

DUEM is run by students from the faculty of engineering at Durham University, who design and build solar cars which they race in international events against other world-leading solar teams.

Established in 2002, they have always pushed the boundaries of technological innovation. Since then they have developed 5 generations of solar car! Their cars have been in races across North America in 2008 and the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge across the Australian Outback in 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The Durham University Solar Car project has been pushing technical boundaries since it started in 2002. Their solar cars are designed and built in partnership with the Department of Engineering, making use of research and practical experience. The solar car is has been designed through thousands of hours of in-depth research, followed by testing, analysis, and experimentation before finally creating a final design.

If you would like to find out more about how the car was developed and the amazing work the team are doing, please visit their website: https://duem.org/
